Biggest Sexual Abuse Scandal in Sports History

The Larry Nassar scandal is the biggest sexual abuse scandal in sports history.

The abuse was global. Nassar abused girls in London at the 2012 Olympics, at the Károlyi Ranch, USA Gymnastics’ training center in Texas, and at gymnastics meets in Rotterdam.

Larry Nassar has been accused of sexual abuse by more than 150 ex-patients, including famous female athletes Simone Biles and McKayla Maroney. It is very hard to grasp that something like this was swept under the carpet for this long while so many girls were suffering at the hand of someone that was supposed to be their doctor.

Shortly after the news was made public, three USA Gymnastics board of director’s executives resigned from their positions. On Jan. 24, Lou Anna Simon, the president of Michigan State University, where Nassar had been employed as a team doctor since 1997, announced her resignation.

USA Gymnastics released a statement as a response to the United States Olympic Committee that stated:

“USA Gymnastics supports the United States Olympic Committee’s letter and accepts the absolute need of the Olympic family to promote a safe environment for all of our athletes. We agree with the USOC’s statement that the interests of our athletes and clubs, and their sport, may be better served by moving forward with meaningful change within our organization, rather than decertification. USA Gymnastics supports an independent investigation that may shine light on how abuse of the proportion described so courageously by the survivors of Larry Nassar could have gone undetected for so long and embraces any necessary and appropriate changes. USA Gymnastics and the USOC have the same goal – making the sport of gymnastics, and others, as safe as possible for athletes to follow their dreams in a safe, positive and empowered environment.”

To me, sincerity is everything I look for in an apology or statement regarding something that went wrong. When I read this, I don’t get that vibe. And others may have other opinions, but I personally disagree because it doesn’t give any indication of what is going on and the specific action they will take to make sure it never happens again. It almost appears as if a lawyer or a robot wrote this rather than a person who felt sincerely affected by this issue.

Nassar has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for his crimes.
